John Oliver does raise many good concerns about right wing governments and business when it gets too big. His videos are very one sided, which is to be expected, but because of the tremendous scope of his show, this can be dangerous. Some of his videos are misleading, either through victimizing people who made poor decisions for themselves or by omitting important information, and scarily, many people act on his words – called the John Oliver phenomenon, when political interest in a certain topic is greatly elevated for a period after he creates a video on it.
Criticisms of big business are important and valid, but I think he takes the wrong approach in suggesting government should be responsible for fixing big business. It’s on the people to choose to shop elsewhere and to not support immoral business practises, and a show like his is a useful tool in showing people what big business is actually like. He should change to a message of empowerment instead of expanding the government, and then his show would be something I’d be able to get behind.
